Abstract

Future highly capable planetary rovers will be able to cover multiple kilometers in a single command cycle, spending most of their traverse in areas never before seen by scientists. In order to make best use of rover resources and avoid the need for return trips, we would like for the rover to perform "science on the fly", automatically detecting targets of interest during traverse and performing appropriate followup measurements. This paper presents an integrated robotic system that can autonomously detect life using natural chlorophyll fluorescence and react with followup measurements to confirm the presence of life using other biomarkers. The system was tested onboard a rover in the Atacama Desert of Chile; autonomous detection and response substantially improved efficiency.
